JOY MATE: from big idea to a fully functional app in 8 days.

An Australian founder had a big idea to bring joy to the world and a launch event days away. We built the app and had it live and fully functional before she walked on stage.

Client

Kellie Pearce, a laughter yoga coach in New South Wales, Australia, and founder of JOY MATE: a daily joy app with a friendly character who guides you through breathing, giggles, kindness and gratitude. A one-person business with no tech team.

Problem

Kellie had a clear vision: joy rooms, joy cards, a kindness meter and a paid membership. She needed a partner to turn it into a real app that worked smoothly from day one.

“I so want this app done. I think I need to bring joy to the world.”

The pressure was real. She had been invited to present at an expo on 8 October and saw it as her best chance to launch. She needed the app live, polished and fully functional in days, not months.

And she is the first to say she isn't technical. She needed someone who could take her idea, her words and her character and make them work, without her having to explain the tech.

What we built

We understood the problem, then picked the platform that fits: a phone-first app that installs to the home screen from a link, with no app store wait and no store fees. Every screen was made to feel warm, playful and true to Kellie's voice.

  • 11 joy rooms. Guided videos for breathing, giggles, mirror chats, meditation and more.
  • Pick a Card. Tap to flip one of 56 joy cards, read aloud by JOY MATE. Favourites can be saved.
  • Karma Kindness Meter. 11 levels of kind acts that unlock one by one, with stars that can't be faked.
  • Gratitude, wins and focus board. A daily journal and a personal vision board with photos.
  • Memberships that run themselves. 30 days free with no card, then AU$11 a month or AU$111 a year.
  • Her own control panel. A surprise we added for Kellie without being asked: she sees who has joined, which rooms are loved most, swaps videos and answers member messages herself.

Before

a big idea and a launch event a week away, with no app to show yet.

After

a live, fully functional joy app her members can use from day one, which Kellie runs on her own.

Working with Hassan

Kellie wasn't handed a tool and left to it. Hassan worked on her wording, her character and her tone until the app sounded like her. When she asked for changes, such as JOY MATE always in capitals, new wording on the card button and a new kindness meter video, they were made and checked with her live on the call.

On the launch call he also did what she hadn't asked for. He built her a control panel and showed it to her as a surprise. She opened it, saw who had joined and which rooms were loved most, and her reaction was pure delight.

He also kept her from going wrong on her own website. He advised her to link the website's sign-up buttons straight into the app, so every member is known to the app from the first tap. And he caught old wording on her site that no longer described the app.

Results

  • Live in 8 days. From first call to a working app, in time for her launch.
  • 21 days before the deadline. She had it in hand well ahead of the date.
  • Fully functional from day one. Rooms, cards, the kindness meter, the journal and memberships all working when she launched.
  • Built the way she pictured it. Her words, her character and her voice, on every screen.
  • Ready for what's next. Kellie is already planning a kids' version with us.

In their words

“It is better than what I could ever imagine. He gets me. Hassan knows what I'm trying to put out there in the world. I love it.”

“I love working with you. This is going to be a hit, and then we're going to do the kids one.”
